Chicago Immigration Statistics
Chicago is a melting pot of people from different regions all over the globe. A Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning (CMAP) report reveals, “In 2017, the Chicago region was home to 1.72 million foreign-born residents, representing 18 percent of the region’s total population.”
The report goes on to say that of these people, 1.1 million foreign-born residents represent 22 percent of the Chicago area’s total labor force.” Many of these immigrants have become American success stories. Fifty-four percent of immigrants to the Chicago area since 2010 have attained a bachelor’s degree, and many of these immigrants have accessed higher paying jobs. The report opines that Chicago’s economic strength in the face of a declining population depends largely on immigrants.
These statistics point to the fact that immigrants are critical to Chicago’s economy. Also, immigrants give Chicago a world-class culture and enhance the lives of those around them. At Vantage Group, we value immigrants and appreciate all the ways that these hardworking people enhance Chicago. If you are an immigrant facing deportation policies that threaten your way of life, we want to help you.

How US Immigration Works
United States immigration law consists of a confusing mix of statutes and executive orders, which frequently face court challenges. What’s more, federal and local enforcement varies. When you face a US immigration challenge, you need skilled legal professionals to help you navigate the complicated laws.
At Vantage Group, we can help you determine where you stand in the immigration process and what legal options are available. Here’s a brief overview of how immigration works in the United States:
- The Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) grants up to 675,000 permanent visas each year;
- Additionally, the INA “sets no limit on the annual admission of U.S. citizens’ spouses, parents, and children under the age of 21”;
- Each year, the President and Congress set the number of refugees to admit to the US through the US Refugee Resettlement Process;
- The US also dispenses temporary visas to travelers, students, and workers, granting them access to live in the US for a limited time; and
- There are no annual limits on the number of temporary visas the US government can dispense.
Once a person obtains a US immigrant visa, they become a lawful permanent resident (LPR).
Some people already in the US may also obtain LPR status. LPRs can apply to almost any US job and can remain in the US permanently, even if they are not employed. After living in the US for five years, LPRs can apply for citizenship.
Once you are an American citizen, you can help your family get to the United States through a family visa. The US issues over 400,000 family visas during most years. In 2017, family visas accounted for two-thirds of all permanent visas issued by the US government.
If you seek a temporary or permanent visa or would like to petition for a family visa, contact Vantage Group. Our skilled legal team can connect you with a network Chicago immigration lawyer who will advise you on the best way to secure legal status in the US.
What You Should Know About DACA
The Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) executive order allows “certain unauthorized aliens who arrived in the United States as children to apply for a two-year forbearance of removal. Those granted such relief become eligible for work authorization and various federal benefits.” President Obama introduced the initiative on June 15, 2012, and the program began accepting applications in August of 2012. The program has aided 700,000 immigrants so far.
On September 5, 2017, the Trump Administration announced that it would end DACA. Several lawsuits over this policy emerged, and in November 2019, the issue wound up before the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court decided the issue in Department of Homeland Security v. Regents of the University of California on June 18, 2020, blocking the administration’s effort to end the program.
For now, DACA benefits stay in place for recipients, and the program might open to new applications. DACA does not provide a direct path to citizenship, but it provides a two-year renewable shield from deportation. If you are eligible for continuing DACA protection, contact Vantage Group for assistance renewing your status.
